A chef who sexually assaulted a schoolgirl he met in a night-club failed to appear at Sligo Circuit Court yesterday.

The man, who appeared before the court last week, was due to be sentenced yesterday. When he could not be located, a bench warrant was issued for his arrest.

Judge Carl Moran said that, when the accused was apprehended, it was his wish that he be kept in custody until January 13th next, when the case will again come before the court.

The court heard last week that the accused had sex with the 14-year-old girl in a caravan at Mullaghmore in north Sligo, after meeting her at a disco in Bundoran in August of last year.

She was holidaying with her parents in the north-west and was staying in a bed-and-breakfast in Bundoran at the time.

The court was told that after the accused met the girl they went to a chip shop and later got a taxi to Mullaghmore.

They went to a caravan belonging to another man who worked in the same premises as the accused.

In a statement to gardai the accused alleged that the plaintiff approached him at the disco, put her arms around him and told she was 18 years old.
