A Dublin man drowned while urinating into the Liffey after attending a family funeral, an inquest into his death was told yesterday.

Mr Richard Creeley (53), of Westpark Drive, Finglas, was trapped in a recess of steps near the Toll Bridge at Dublin's North Wall quay on November 7th. He was discovered in the water by two passers by at about 10.30p.m.

Yesterday, Mr Joe Gilsenan told the Dublin Coroner's Court that he and his friend, Mr Derek Byrne, noticed a body in the water.

They pulled the deceased from the river and noticed that the fly of his trousers was undone. It was his opinion that Mr Creeley had fallen into the Liffey while urinating.

Mr George Vallance said he saw Mr Creeley sitting on a wall outside a pub. He had a few drinks but did not appear intoxicated.

Returning a verdict of accidental drowning, Dr Brian Farrell, the Dublin city coroner, said that the dead man had a moderate blood alcohol level of 155 mg and had tragically fallen into the water.
