A 29-year-old man has been jailed for seven years, with the last three years suspended after being convicted of manslaughter at Tralee Circuit Criminal Court.

Judge Carroll Moran convicted Thomas Mc Donagh, of the manslaughter of his 55 year old father Jeremiah McDonagh when he threw a chair at him.

A chair leg went penetrated his father's eye socket andhe died two days later in Tralee General Hospital. A rubber cap was removed from his brain at post mortem.

Judge Moran said Thomas McDonagh had a very unhappy life and had experienced "brutal neglect".

Judge Moran also took into account the fact McDonagh had dialed 999 three times and had stayed with his injured father on the night of September 25th as well as the guilty plea. There was no element of pre-meditation.

Judge Moran recommended he receive counseling and vocational training. He refused leave to appeal against the severity of the sentence.Ends
