Man charged with nun’s murder

A nineteen-year-old man has been charged at Carrickmackross District Court with the murder of Sister Philomena Lyons.

A nineteen-year-old man has been charged at Carrickmackross District Court with the murder of Sister Philomena Lyons.

Kealan Herron, from Derry, Lattin, Castleblayney, was charged with the murder of the 68-year-old nun in Ballybay, Co Monaghan, on Saturday.

Judge Flann Brennan was told that Mr Herron was arrested at 6.15 am today by Detective Inspector Hugh Coll and taken to Monaghan Garda Station. He did not reply when charged with at 5.06 pm tonight .

He was remanded in custody to St Patrick's Institution for young offenders in Dublin and will appear at Drogheda District Court on Friday.
