A Drogheda man was remanded in custody when he appeared in court on Saturday night accused of murdering German tourist Bettina Poeschel.

Mr Michael Murphy (39), Rathmullan Park, Drogheda, was arrested on Saturday morning and appeared before a special sitting of Ardee District Court charged with the murder of Ms Poeschel (28), a journalist from Munich, at Donore, Co Meath, on September 25th.

Solicitor Mr Paddy Goodwin, defending, made no application for bail but asked Judge Seβn McBride to direct that a psychiatric report be prepared on his client before his next court appearance.

Mr Murphy was remanded in custody to appear before Drogheda District Court next Friday. He was jeered by a small group of onlookers as he was led away.
