A man has been remanded in custody after being charged with the murder of a woman in Midleton, east Cork, on Easter Sunday morning.

Derrick Daly (46), St Vincent’s Hostel, Anglesea Street, Cork, was charged at Midleton District Court with the murder of Catherine Smart (57) at Bailick Court, Midleton, on April 4th.

Judge Michael Pattwell remanded Mr Daly, a native of Enfield, Co Meath, in custody to appear again at the court on May 20th. He also granted Mr Daly free legal aid.

Ms Smart’s body was found by gardaí at about 9.45am on April 4th. A postmortem confirmed she had suffered serious head injuries and had died a violent death.
