A man has been arrested in connection with an incident in Co Derry which another man was beaten by a gang and left in the middle of a road to be killed by an oncoming car.
It was initially believed the man died as a result of a hit-and-run.
As detectives launched a murder inquiry into the death in Tobermore, they urged the driver to come forward in a bid to hunt down the man's killers.
The victim, a Scottish man in his 30s visiting family in Northern Ireland, is believed to have just left a football club premises when he was attacked at around 2am on Saturday.
Police confirmed he was subjected to a serious assault by several men before being left in the car's path on Maghera Road.
It is understood the driver stopped at the scene for a short time and may have been driving a red car with a passenger on board.
"Police urgently need to speak to the driver of the vehicle which struck the man as he or she may hold important witness information about the assault," a Police Service of Northern Ireland spokesman said.
Detectives do not believe the attack was fuelled by sectarianism. Instead, they are investigating it as a murder carried out by the gang involved in the beating.
