Leeds - The man whose arrest was blamed for causing riots in Leeds urged the local community to remain calm yesterday. Mr Hossein Miah (31) asked the Asian community not to take part in any further violence on the streets of Harehills, Leeds, and claimed that his alleged attack had been used as an "excuse" by trouble-makers.

Mr Miah was arrested by police on Sunday for a motoring offence. It is alleged he was treated heavy-handedly, with officers squirting CS gas into his eyes. During a night of rioting police officers were pelted with bricks and bottles after hundreds of youths, mainly Asians, took to the streets. West Yorkshire's assistant chief constable, Mr Grahame Maxwell, told a press conference he believed the trouble had been planned and "the events were criminal activity, pure and simple".
