Gardaí in Cork have arrested a man over a hit and run this morning that killed an 85-year-old woman.

The man, who is in his 50s, is being held at Midleton Garda Station.

The woman was struck by a car at 7am on the N25 as she crossed the main street in Castlemartyr village, about five miles from Midleton.

The car, travelling from Youghal to Midleton, failed to stop, a Garda spokesman said.

Separately, gardaí have named a man who died in a crash in Ennis, Co Clare yesterday as William Ryan (81) of Highfield Park, Ennis.
