A man has been arrested in connection with an attack in Dublin at the weekend that left two female Welsh tourists in hospital.

The man, an Australian national in his thirties, was arrested last night in O'Connell Street and taken to Pearse Street Garda station for questioning under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 .

The women were returning to their hotel on Clare Street with their husbands when, in an unprovoked attack, a man knocked them to the ground and kicked and punched them.

The women, one in her forties and the other in her sixties, suffered serious facial injuries.

The man can be held for up to 12 hours before being released or charged.
