Police in the North have launched a murder inquiry after a man was gunned down in a flat in Co Antrim early this morning.

Mr John "Jock" Allen (31) died in hospital after he was attacked in the hallway of a flat in Rashee Park, Ballyclare. The shooting took place shortly before 2.30 a.m. He suffered wounds to the head and legs.

The loyalist Ulster Volunteer Force is suspected of being linked to the attack. At the time of the incident, the dead man was staying at the home of his younger brother, who was uninjured.

Mr Allen was not thought to have any connections with paramilitary rganisations, and was described by neighbours as "a gentle giant." But he was believed to have been targeted in an earlier UVF attack.
