THIS is the statement issued by the Taoiseach, Mr Bruton, at 6.25 p.m. on Saturday:
It is with regret that I have accepted the resignation of the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications, Michael Lowry.
Minister Lowry has tendered his resignation from office because he wishes to be in a position, from outside Government, to deal with the public disclosure of matters connected with his business career before he became a member of the Government.
The Minister has been a loyal personal friend and good colleague, and a hardworking Minister who showed both commitment and vigour in carrying out his duties.
I hope that Michael's natural good humour, and strength under pressure, will help him and his family through this difficult time, and I also hope that he, and his family, will be given the space and time which is necessary in such circumstances.
