LONDON - A royal web site went on line yesterday afternoon, but hardly with a fanfare.

The neat, smart site - at http://www.royal.gov.uk - produced in-house by the British government's Central Office of information, greets visitors with polite and formal language not often found on the Internet: "This is the official web site of the monarchy in Britain - we hope you find your visit informative and enjoyable," reads the front page.

Pages include information on the royal finances, palaces, and a summary of a typical day in the life of Queen Elizabeth.
