The total eclipse of the sun will be broadcast live on the Irish Times website (http://www.ireland.com), allowing users worldwide to witness it on their computers.
The Irish Times on the Web's broadcast will take place from the Irish Ferries ship Normandy, which will be positioned in the "path of totality" off the coast of France, near Cherbourg.
Although total eclipses occur about once every 18 months, usually in remote parts of the world, the next one to occur in western Europe is due in 2090. The last total eclipse visible over many areas of Britain was in 1927.
Opticians and astronomers have warned that looking at the eclipse may cause instant blindness.
The eclipse can be viewed live on the Irish Times website on Wednesday, August 11th, from 11 a.m., weather permitting.
