London - Writer John le Carre criticised Mr Tony Blair yesterday and said he wanted to use his vote in the general election to punish him.

The author of The Spy Who Came In From The Cold told the Daily Telegraph: "I would like to punish Blair.

"I thought last time [the election], in 1997, that he was lying when he denied he was a socialist. The worst thing I can say about him is that he was telling the truth."

Le Carre was also highly critical of Mr Blair's reaction to President Bush's missile defence shield and handling of the Kyoto protocol on cutting greenhouse gases and the South African lawsuit involving multinational pharmaceutical companies.
