Riga - A Riga district court yesterday convicted Vasili Kononov for his role in the killing of nine people in 1944 while he was commander of a second World War communist guerrilla group in Latvia. In the country's first war crimes conviction since it regained independence from Moscow in 1991, the trial judge sentenced the 77-year-old to six years.
