A last minute penalty by Quinton Fortune earned South Africa a draw after they came back from two goals down in the opening match of group B today.

Fortune converted the first penalty of the tournament after Sibusiso Zuma was brought down by Paraguayan keeper Ricardo Tavarelli.

The Paraguayans had taken the lead in the 39th minute when striker Roque Santa Cruz headed home a Francisco Arce free kick. Arce made it 2-0 himself 10 minutes after the break when he rifled in a direct free kick off the underside of the bar.

But the South Africans fought back to score in the 63rd minute when Paraguayan defender Estanislao Struway skewed the ball into his own net as he tried to clear a Teboho Mokoena shot. It was the first own goal of the tournament.
