Landslide kills 24 in southwest China, 43 missing

At least twenty-four people were killed and 43 others missing in a massive landslide in southwest China's Yunnan province.

At least twenty-four people were killed and 43 others missing in a massive landslide in southwest China's Yunnan province.

The mud-rock flow also injured 14 people and destroyed more than 600 houses in 10 villages in Yuxi city, Xinping county early Wednesday morning, the official Xinhua news agency said.

Rescue teams rushed to the scene of the accident but as of midday Irish time, 43 people were still missing, it said.

The injured were being treated and quilts, clothes and food have been delivered to the stricken areas.

The flow also destroyed tobacco plants which are the local people's livelihood.
