The Minister for Agriculture and Food, Mr Walsh, yesterday confirmed his request to the EU Commission that intervention beef be sent to North Korea, where there are widespread food shortages.

Mr Walsh said that using such stocks for humanitarian purposes would not jeopardise existing commercial trade flows as North Korea was not a major importer of beef.

"Intervention stocks are now at such a level that the Community must avail of every realistic opportunity to reduce them," he said.
