Kalemie - The south-eastern town of Kalemie in the Democratic Republic of the Congo was firmly in rebel hands yesterday with no sign of any clashes, a correspondent reported after flying in from the rebels' eastern stronghold of Goma. Sources in Kinshasa had reported Kalemie to be under a "terrible" assault by forces loyal to the President, Mr Laurent Kabila, with many deaths. Some 5,000 loyalist troops fled into the bush on August 26th when the rebels marched in.
