Italian politician Ms Emma Bonino has left a hospital in Milan after ending a six-day hunger-strike to protest against a lack of media coverage for a number of issues in the election campaign, her doctor said today.
Doctor Augusto Magnone said Ms Bonino was recovering well after suspending her strike on Thursday and left Milan's San Paolo hospital late Friday, a week after she started the protest.
Ms Bonino, a former EU commissioner and leading figure of the small Radical Party, has said that she may again refuse food and water "within the next days if things don't improve".
After ending her fast, Ms Bonino appeared annoyed that her "physical condition is being more discussed than the state of health of our democracy and freedom, issues which the Radicals have put on the agenda."
The 53-year-old member of the Italian parliament was rushed to Milan's San Paolo hospital on Wednesday.
She argues that her party is not being given a fair share of media coverage in the run-up to the poll on May 13th and wants issues to be covered which she believes are being left out of the general political debate.
These include the limits of scientific research, the use of embryos in research, abortion, and relations between Italy and the Vatican.
Ms Bonino began her hunger-strike amid critical international media coverage of business tycoon Silvio Berlusconi's bid for power, turning the spotlight away from her highprofile protest.
