Serie B side Sampdoria goalkeeper Matteo Sereni has signed for Ipswich Town, the Italian club announced today.

The 26-year-old has agreed a four-year deal with the club for a figure believed to be around £4.5 million sterling.

Sereni has played for the past two years with the cash-strapped Italian outfit and was keen to return to the top flight with Ipswich who have qualified for this season's UEFA Cup.

He is rated among the top Italian goalkeepers, with Fiorentina recently expressing an interest in him as a replacement for Francesco Toldo.

Serni will come in as a replacement for Richard Wright, who signed for Arsenal earlier this summer.
