Rome - Italians harbour a deepening fear of foreigners and think immigrants are a direct cause of an increase in crime, a new survey released yesterday showed.

Three-quarters of Italians said they believed immigration and higher crime were directly linked. Italy in fact has one of the lowest rates of immigration in Europe, with just 2.2 per cent of the population of 57 million classified as immigrants. Crime is also on the decline.
