An Irishman accused of murder told a court in Chonbuir, Thailand, yesterday that he was tortured by "tourist police" to extract a confession.

Mr Colin Martin (39), from Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan, is accused of murdering Mr Brett Holdsworth, a New Zealander, on July 1st, 1997. Mr Martin said he was nowhere near the scene of the murder in Sri Racha, eastern Thailand.

The case was adjourned until June 8th to enable Mr Martin to call witnesses.

As he was led away he said: "When I'm free I'm going to sue the hell out of the Irish Foreign Ministry".
