TWO IRISH students have been selected as finalists at this year’s European Science, Engineering and Technology awards.

Rian Edman, from Macroom in Co Cork and a student at Cork Institute of Technology, explored the capacity and performance of a six-stroke engine.

Julie Clarke, a student at University College Dublin, carried out a study of buildings affected by the Metro North project for her civil engineering project.

The awards are among the most important and prestigious for science and technology undergraduates in Europe. The ceremony takes place in London next month.

Final-year student Rian, one of three finalists in the mechanical engineering category, is the first student of an Irish technology institute to be shortlisted for the award. His submission was a 2,000-word essay based on his final-year project: “Testing and evaluation of a six-stroke engine.” The project was displayed at CIT’s annual engineering exhibition earlier this year.

His formal college work placement took him to Nantes in France, where he carried out composite material research and development.

The awards cover topics in 15 categories, from biology and chemistry to food science and maritime technology.
