Mother of man assaulted in Sydney tells of relief at his progress

The mother of a young Irishman, who ended up in a coma after an assault in Australia, has spoken of her delight and relief after he was discharged from hospital as part of his road to recovery.

Stephanie Cierans said she and her husband, Declan were both delighted and relieved when their son, Jason (29) was discharged from hospital nine weeks after he was assaulted in Sydney.

“We are here nine weeks and the Monday we arrived, our son was anointed and we were told he had just hours to live and coming from that to where we are today is the best news ever.”

“Jason has been discharged from hospital - he had a CT scan last week and we got the results of it yesterday and the doctors are very very happy with him,” Ms Cierans told Cork’s RED FM

Mr Cierans from Mount Nebo Avenue in Gurranebraher on Cork's northside was hospitalised on August 22nd after he was attacked outside a pub at Bondi Junction in Sydney.

Mr Cierans, who has been in Australia for six years, was put into an induced coma and spent several weeks in the intensive care unit at St Vincent’s Hospital before being discharged last week.

Ms Cierans told Red FM: “The swelling of the brain has settled down ... it will take six months for Jason to get back to his full health but it will take years for Jason to be Jason.”

Meanwhile an Argentinian, Adrian Martinez is currently on bail after being charged last month with assault causing grievous bodily harm to Mr Cierans outside the Tea Gardens Pub in Bondi Junction

Mr Martinez (30) is due to return to Waverley local court on October 22nd. Another man (27) has also been charged with affray in relation to the incident in which Mr Cierans was assaulted.
