Man dies after car crash on M1 in Co Louth

Vehicle understood to have been travelling in wrong direction on northboud carriageway

A man in his 40s has died after a car crash on the M1 northbound, near Castlebellingham, Co Louth.

A man in his 40s has died after a car crash on the M1 northbound, near Castlebellingham, Co Louth.

The three car collision occured at about 10.30pm on Sunday. It is understood the man’s car may have been travelling in the wrong direction on the northbound carriageway.

Another driver, a woman in her 40s, was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital with serious injuries. The driver and passenger of the third car were also removed to hospital, but are not thought to be seriously injured.

Gardaí closed the road at the scene for a brief time to facilitate a technical examination of the area by a forensic team but it has since reopened.
