Man (53) dies and elderly woman critical following fire in Stoneybatter

Emergency services provide life suppport at scene

A man in his 50s has died following a fire at a terraced home in Dublin’s Stoneybatter. An elderly woman was also seriously injured and is being treated in hospital.

Firefighters removed the two individuals from the home on Sigurd Road after neighbours raised the alarm at about 6.25pm. Both casualties received advanced life support at the scene.

The man was taken to the Mater hospital, where he died a short time later. The woman, believed to be in her 90s, is being treated at James Connolly Memorial Hospital, Blanchardstown. Her condition is thought to be critical.

Seven units of Dublin Fire Brigade – including two ambulances – were called to the scene.

Firefighters using breathing apparatus entered the blazing home and paramedics were at the scene to provide immediate assistance.

The man was found slumped in a front room, while the woman was found in a room to the rear of the premises.

Gardaí said the scene was being preserved for technical examination.
