NEW YORK - Iraq has told the United Nations that economic sanctions threaten its society with a "horrendous disaster that may lead to its collapse" and accused the United States of attempting genocide.

In a 14-page memorandum to Secretary-General, Dr Boutros Boutros-Ghali, published yesterday, Iraq gave statistics detailing what it said were the effects of sanctions on living conditions, health and educational standards.
