Iran has notified the United States that it will not oppose targeted military strikes against those believed responsible for last week's terror attacks, a Canadian newspaper said today.
Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, yesterday officially condemned the attacks but said punishing Afghanistan - which seems an increasingly likely possibility - might cause a human catastrophe.
But the National Postdaily said senior Iranian officials had contacted Canadian Foreign Minister Mr John Manley and asked him to pass on the message to Washington that Iran would not condemn US retaliation against those responsible.
"They [the Iranians] feel the tragedy as well and they support any targeted military action, but it must be targeted . . . But the Iranians can't call the Americans and say that, so they are looking for other friends and allies [to do so]", the paper quoted one Canadian official as saying.
A spokesman for Mr Manley told reporters the minister had spoken to Iranian officials yesterday but said he was not aware of the final outcome of the conversation .
