The UK's premier mobile operator BT Cellnet is to use Iona's e-business platform to create a new infrastructure for its operational support system.

In a statement the company said the new system would "address the constant evolution in the cellular marketplace."

BT Cellnet will use Iona's Orbix 2000 and 3.0 Java Edition products to connect the application involved, from the network management layer to associated clients.

Iona's Mr Peter Lelliott said: "The IONA solution will help BT Cellnet develop and deploy a new software infrastructure that should increase their competitive advantage."

A spokesman for BT Cellnet said: "Our infrastructure initiative is a key strategic. The nature of the project requires an open and scalable architecture, to enhance the flexibility and performance of our environment."
