Central Criminal Court judge Paul Carney has indicated that the provision of interpreters for criminal cases will be curbed due to budget cuts.

Mr Justice Carney was speaking after an application for four interpreters to be provided for the trial of three foreign defendants accused of rape. All the defendants speak the same language. The judge granted the application but said that in future he would assign only one to each side in cases where a defendant does not speak English.
