TD further remanded on tax charges

A Co Limerick TD charged with two tax offences has been further remanded on bail. Independent Fianna Fáil TD Michael Collins (65) appeared before Rathkeale District Court in Newcastlewest, where the case was adjourned until September 28th.

Man dies in police car collision

A man was killed and several others injured when a car and the police vehicle following it collided on the outskirts of north Belfast yesterday morning.

The Northern Ireland Police Ombudsman's office has launched an investigation into the fatal crash, which happened shortly before 10am near Glengormley, Co Antrim.

The PSNI said a number of people, including some of their officers, were taken to hospital. The dead man, understood to be a passenger in the civilian car and in his late teens, was not immediately identified.

US sailor airlifted to Cork hospital

An injured crewman on board the US destroyer The Sullivans was flown to to Cork University Hospital. hospital by the Shannon coast guard helicopter yesterday. The crewman sustained a badly crushed hand in an accident on the ship.

FG adds two to ticket in Clare

Fine Gael last night added two candidates to the party's ticket to contest next year's general election in the four seat Clare constituency.

On the recommendation of party leader Enda Kenny, the national executive ratified councillors Madeleine Taylor-Quinn and Joe Carey. They lost out at the party's May convention to councillor Tony Mulcahy and the party's only Clare TD, Pat Breen.

Steam train trip on Davitt centenary

The Railway Preservation Society of Ireland and Iarnród Éireann are running a steam train trip to Foxford and Ballina, Co Mayo, to mark Michael Davitt's centenary, leaving at 7.55am from Heuston station next Saturday and returning on Sunday.

Tickets are €60 for adults and €50 for senior citizens and under-16s. They are on sale at the Iarnród Éireann centre, Lower Abbey Street, Dublin, at Pearse Station, Westland Row, and at EBS outlets at Drumcondra, Dún Laoghaire and Malahide, and at Heuston station on the day.

Contingency plan for avian flu

Minister for Agriculture Mary Coughlan and her Northern counterpart David Cairns have discussed the implementation of a contingency plan for the island should avian flu strike here. Describing the meeting as useful, the ministers acknowledged the co-operation between both departments.

They noted their main achievements to date including complementary approaches towards preventing the introduction of animal disease.

Hospital visitors asked to stay away

The Health Service Executive is asking people not to visit the Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore, Co Offaly, due to an outbreak of the winter vomiting bug.
