The Spiritans, the congregation that runs St Michael’s College, Ailesbury Road, in Dublin, confirmed at the weekend that funds had gone missing, but did not specify the amount.

In a statement yesterday, a spokesman on behalf of the college said an “apparent misappropriation of funds” had been uncovered and a Garda investigation was under way.

“The board of management are happy to be able to offer the reassurance that no public funds have been misappropriated and that the quality of education offered by the school will not be adversely affected by this development,” the spokesman said.

Gardaí from Donnybrook station are investigating.
