A 19-year-old Wexford man who had earlier shot and wounded his former girlfriend turned the shotgun on himself, an inquest in Wexford was told yesterday.
The inquest was told John Hendrick, of Talbot Green, Wexford, had Ms Amy Bolger called from The Phoenix Bar, at St Aidan's Crescent, Wexford, at 9.30 p.m. on November 5th, 2000, and shot her in the back.
He then turned the shotgun on himself, causing fatal head injuries. Ms Bolger survived the shooting.
Hendrick and Ms Bolger had been going out together but the relationship had ended some months previously.
Mr James Pitman, of Wolfe Tone Villas, Wexford, said he was in The Phoenix Bar with friends when he witnessed a row between Hendrick and Ms Bolger, and later between Hendrick and Mr Jason Lawlor.
He said Hendrick left the pub with another person and they drove off. Later Hendrick returned while he was outside with friends and he asked them to get Ms Bolger. After she went out, he heard a bang.
He said when he looked around a corner, he saw Hendrick with a gun to his head. He then pulled the trigger and flew into the air, landing on his back.
The inquest heard death was the result of a shotgun injury to the head which was self-inflicted.
