Sir, – I have enjoyed the friendliness of living in west Cork for more than 35 years, but the occasions when I receive a salute from other drivers are diminishing due to the fact that they are holding a mobile phone.
My brother-in-law, who lives in the UK, really appreciates being chatted and waved to, as do all my friends and family from the UK.
A while ago, against my advice, he put ashes from the fire in the landfill bag, which he then put on top of his car en route to the recycling site.
It took him quite a few minutes to realise that the enthusiastic waving from other drivers and passersby wasn’t their delight in greeting him but letting him know the car was alight. – Yours, etc,
