The inquest into the death of Ashling Gallagher from Achill Island enters its seventh day today in Castlebar, Co Mayo, making it one of the longest ever inquests in the history of the State.

Ms Gallagher (22) was killed instantly on December 22nd, 2004, when the Volkswagen Caddy van she was driving collided with a cement mixer on the N59 national secondary route near the village of Mulranny. Ms Gallagher’s family says her vehicle “swerved inexplicably on to the incorrect side at a bend that lacked the required surface texture”.

Mayo County Council denies responsibility.
