New Delhi - General elections in India are imminent after the United Front caretaker government yesterday recommended parliament's dissolution, four days after it resigned having lost its majority in the Lok Sabha or lower house, Rahul Bedi reports.

The decision to dissolve parliament was taken at a meeting chaired by the caretaker Prime Minister, Mr Inder Kumar Gujral, after hectic political manoeuvring during which the Congress party and the largest opposition party, the Hindu fundamentalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), lobbied in vain to try to cobble together 272 deputies to form a new government.
