Army comes to aid of road race

The Defence Forces have come to the aid of one of Ireland's most scenic road races, which was facing cancellation this year due to the lack of a support base, writes Lorna Siggins.

The Army will provide tents for the Connemarathon, which formerly used Peacocke's Hotel at Maam Cross as its headquarters.

The hotel's closure put the event in jeopardy, as there are no other facilities nearby.

The race is limited to 2,000 runners. Its route runs by Lough Inagh, Killary fjord, Leenane village, the Maam valley and Maam village before returning to Maam Cross.

Athletes from all over the world have been attracted to it since it was initiated four years ago.
