Seriously ill man sentenced to eight years for sexual abuse of girl

A seriously ill man who sexually abused a girl and threatened to kill her mother if she told anyone has been sentenced to eight years in jail. The 55-year-old, who cannot be named to protect the identity of his victim, began abusing the child shortly after he moved in with her mother.

He pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to two counts of sexual assault in the Dublin home between 2002 and 2003. Another five counts of sexual assault were taken into consideration. The final two years of the term were suspended on strict conditions.

Man to go to jail after christening

A man will begin a seven-year sentence next month for selling cocaine after he attends the christening of his child. Paul Connolly (30), Wood Avens, Clondalkin, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to possessing the drug for sale or supply in 2008. The last year of the sentence was suspended.

Trial of brothers moved to Dublin

The trial of brothers Michael O'Loughlin (30), Rahylin Glebe, Ballybane, and Eddie O'Loughlin (27), Rockfield Park, Rahoon, both Galway, who are charged with directing the activities of a criminal organisation, has been moved to Dublin because an appearance at the local District Court was deemed to have attracted "adverse publicity".
