Defendants told to get work by judge

A judge has told five defendants they must all "get a job" before they return to him at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to have their sentences finalised.

Judge Donagh McDonagh gave the orders to the five men in three cases involving drugs, vehicle hijacking and robbery.

Ross Caffrey (20), Oliver Bond House, Dublin, who pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine worth €9,500, was told he had shown "a fondness for easy money" and he should now "earn his crust by the sweat of his brow". He is to return to court on March 15th next year showing his employment record.

"Ireland is importing Polish workers to work in building sites. You are a big strong lad - get a job," said Judge McDonagh. "I don't care if it is drawing water, hewing wood or cleaning latrines."

He told John McDonagh (28), Mohill, Co Leitrim, and Martin Lawrence (21) and John Stokes (26), Cappagh, Finglas, that "work is a great cure" and they should "show an employment record" by their sentence date, February 26th next year.

The three had pleaded guilty to unlawfully seizing a vehicle at Shanghan Green, Ballymun, on February 22nd, 2005.

Charles Magee (48), Fatima Mansions, has to be at work "this day week" regardless of the nature of the work, Judge McDonagh told him. His sentence for robbery of €265 from Soho Books, Wynnfield Road, on November 11th, 2004, will be finalised on December 18th.

Man gets three years for assaults

A man who injured a garda and security guard while resisting arrest has been jailed for three years by Judge Michael White at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Moses O'Connor (25), Northumberland Place, Dún Laoghaire, pleaded guilty to obstructing Garda Kian Long in Dún Laoghaire on April 30th, 2003.

O'Connor injured a security guard who was helping Garda Long to restrain him after the theft of a mobile phone from an O2 phone store. Judge White said he was concerned with the number of previous assaults of which O'Connor had been convicted.

The sentence was backdated to July 27th, 2004.
