The National Health Executive of public sector union IMPACT meets at 2 p.m. today to discuss its reaction to proposed job cuts in a number of regional health boards.
IMPACT has stated it is determined to oppose all cutbacks ordered under the Government's cost-cutting programme.
Although an official announcement is not expected until 4 p.m., the outcome of the meeting is likely to lead to some form of industrial action, said IMPACT Information Officer Mr Bernard Harbor.
The first ballot for industrial action as a result of the Western Health Board's plans to cut 169 clerical and administrative jobs is taking place in Galway today.
Ward clerks at University College Hospital in Galway, members of SIPTU, say they are opposed to the cuts, which they say are going ahead without any consultation.
