Journalist, writer and broadcaster Ms Nell McCafferty has been conferred with an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters from Staffordshire University in England for her contribution to areas of research interest to the university: journalism, feminism and Irish studies, particularly her work on the lives of contemporary Irish women.

Ms McCafferty is the author of several books and a frequent contributor to Hot Press, Magill and the Sunday Tribune. She is known for her book Peggy Deery, as well as her In the Eyes of the Law column, which she wrote during seven years with The Irish Times.

Born in Derry, she graduated from Queen's University with an arts degree.
