Help sought from financial institutions

FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS were urged yesterday to make themselves more accessible to people with intellectual disabilities

FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS were urged yesterday to make themselves more accessible to people with intellectual disabilities. Speaking at the launch of a book produced by Inclusion Ireland, Mary O'Dea, consumer director at the Financial Regulator, said people with an intellectual disability wanted more information on how to manage their money.

The book, Making Decisions About Money, aims to help people with an intellectual disability to manage their budgets and finances, and provides information on banks, credit cards, loans and credit unions.

The CEO of Inclusion Ireland, Deirdre Carroll, said that in the past people with intellectual disabilities had not been considered able to make decisions regarding the management of their money in the past. Thankfully, she said, this perception had changed in recent years.
