Deep brain stimulation is a form of treatment used to counteract the tremors which are symptoms of movement disorders such as Parkinson's disease.

It involves the implantation of electrodes into specific structures in the brain (the sub thalamic nucleus) which control movement and muscle function. The electrodes are connected by a lead to a neurostimulator under the skin which can be adjusted by patients with a remote control devise.
