General practitioners, schools and creches were yesterday put on alert by the MidWestern Health Board following an outbreak of shigellosis (gastrointestinal infections) in children in the area.

Dr Tessa Greally, public health specialist at the board, said 15 cases had been reported since February, compared with one case last year.
