Prague - The Czech President, Mr Vaclav Havel (62), was taken to hospital yesterday a day after he cancelled his official schedule for the rest of the week due to an upper chest infection and fever, the Czech CTK news agency said.

It quoted his spokesman as saying that Mr Havel, whose life has been threatened by illness on three separate occasions since late 1996, was to begin treatment immediately with antibiotics.
