A proposed petrol station to be built on a flood plain of the Shannon in Co Leitrim risks contamination of the river, the Green Party has said.

An Bord Pleanála granted planning permission for the petrol station close to an out- of-town shopping centre occupied by Tesco and Woodies, on land owned by local Fine Gael councillor Gerry Reynolds.

Green Party spokesman Tom Kivlehan recalled a previous planning application which was rejected on the grounds that the proposed site was on a floodplain which was prone to regular flooding.
