Biodegradable disinfectant is on the market for farmers and other interests seeking to protect against foot-and-mouth disease and not damage the environment, according to a Monaghan-based company, writes Lorna Siggins. Mr Malcom Totten of Agrihealth in Monaghan is the Irish distributor for Antec Virkon-S, which is "completely biodegradable", he says.

Coastwatch Ireland has warned of a "serious" risk of water pollution from the amounts of disinfectant being used as a defence against foot-and-mouth disease. It appealed to those using disinfectant to ensure it is applied well away from water courses and drains.
