Some 189 growers are to benefit from €9.4 million in horticulture grants announced today.

Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Trevor Sargent said the grants would also benefit consumers, who he encouraged to eat more fruit and vegetables as part of a healthy diet.

The grants for investment in new facilities cover all areas of horticultural production including soft fruits and apples, field vegetables, bee-keeping, mushrooms, and protected and nursery crops.

Mr Sargent, who has special responsibility for horticulture, said interest in the aid scheme was at its highest since it started in 2000.

"There is need for improved production structures and equipment for energy conservation, good agriculture practice, proper hygiene and environmental standards and improved working conditions," said Mr Sargent.

"These improvements are essential to increase competitiveness, ensure sustainable production and to assist growers in meeting the increasing demands of retail outlets."

The grants, provided for under the National Development Plan (2007 - 2013) will help stimulate a sector valued at over €300 million and generating annual retail sales of around €650 million.
